How The Family Came to Live on Divot Court

Amy shares the background on moving into the house. She says, “When we were looking for a new home in late 1997, I was five months pregnant with our third child. We had a checklist of things we wanted in our new home. We wanted it to be on a cul de sac, so our kids could play safely. We insisted on four bedrooms upstairs including the master as our kids were all under six at the time. We wanted a home that was light and airy with nice views and a great yard for dogs and kids. When we saw 3903, we knew that this was the right home for us. It had all these features plus it was in a neighborhood where even in mid December, people were out on the walking paths jogging and playing with their kids in the playgrounds. And it had a lake. We were sold.”

Space for People of All Ages

“22 years later, as empty nesters, this house still feels like a home that’s big enough for our adult kids and their friends to come home to visit (or have extended visits during an unforeseen pandemic), yet it still feels comfortable when it’s just the two of us,” Amy shares.

Remodeling

“We remodeled the kitchen a few years ago to give it an updated and clean feel, while still retaining the kitchen’s original charm,” explains Amy.

Also, she says, “When our kids were in high school, we wanted our basement to be the “fun” place where kids wanted to gather for movies, dance parties, ping pong and redecorated it accordingly. It was a light, bright space for kids to have some privacy, yet still be appropriately supervised.”

What the Couple Will Miss

Amy answers, “Sitting on our decks in the warm weather (which not infrequently can show up in November or February). Seeing the occasional bobcat kitten wander into the yard. Listening to the owls talk to each other from their respective rooftops. The views of the Flatirons, the foothills and eastern plains as we walk the neighborhood or sit outside. The social events put on by our active HOA—the Octoberfest in the fall, lake party in the summer. The kindness of neighbors who have also lived here for 20 plus years, who have watched out for our kids and watched them grow into adults. We feel we have the best of all worlds here—an engaged and caring community surrounded by an unparalleled playground designed by Mother Nature herself, yet still close to every possible convenience that the Boulder area offers.”

To summarize, Amy says, “We will miss this home and this neighborhood very much, but are comforted that the house and its surroundings will be the source of new and equally special memories for its future inhabitants. We are excited for its future.”

The Neighborhood and Surrounding Areas

The home is situated in Lake Valley–an amazing neighborhood that features a lake, a golf course, and access to miles of trails. This is what Amy has to say about the neighborhood and surrounding areas, “Lake Valley is a unique neighborhood. While your neighbors are close by, you are surrounded by open spaces—a golf course, hiking and biking trails, and the outlying rural neighborhoods where cows and horses graze and wildlife abounds. Boulder is only 10 minutes away and the shops and restaurants of Gunbarrel, Niwot and Longmont are equally close.

We love to bike and run and walk our dogs—and simply need to walk out the front door to do so. For many of the 22 years, I would wake up to run before dawn and was given the gift of incredible sunrises coming up over the lake for my effort. Sunsets can be equally stunning out here. Double rainbows are not an uncommon site after summer rains.

Winter out on the open space has its own special charms as well. If you snowshoe or cross country ski, you can do that just outside your front door.

Conventional sports have their place too. Of course, living on Divot Court means a golf course is close by. My son grew up playing tennis on the courts down the hill, with friends and with his ultimate competition, my husband. Life came full circle when my son was finally able to beat his dad.

As our kids grew up, going to the lake was the ultimate outing during the long summer days. There would always be friends down there to join them in jumping off the log that always seemed to turn up, swimming out to the docks, or throwing crackers into the water to watch the fish come and eat their fill. Many families have their own paddle boards, canoes or kayaks which can be docked safely on the lakeside during the summer months. We held many birthday parties at the lake as well as more impromptu gatherings—you bring the Cheese-Its and I’ll bring the wine—sorts of events.

While you need to be a member to play golf at Lake Valley, the club house is always open for lunch, dinner and drinks. When you just don’t feel like driving or like cooking, the restaurant has something for everyone. Niwot has some great independent restaurants and coffee shops that we have enjoyed over the years. Most recently, we have become big fans of 1914 House. The Greenbriar Inn is also just a few minutes from the house. Tucked in at the entrance to Left Hand Canyon, the restaurant is known for its beautiful setting, classic American cuisine and elegant ambience.”
